EM applications

In animal husbandry, the benefits of EM use can be observed quickly: improvements in digestion and in general health, and increases in productivity.

The following practices are to be adopted:

  • EM bokashi to be used as a feed additive, and/or activated EM solution (AEM) to be sprayed on fodder.
  • AEM to be mixed into drinking water.
  • AEM to be sprayed in the animal shed.
  • AEM to be spread on the bedding.
  • AEM to be used in septic tanks collecting animal wastes.
  • EM5 to be used as preventative and curative measure against ticks.

The rate of addition of EM bokashi into feed is 1-5%. For adult milk cattle add 50-100 g per day, for calves 10-20 g per day (with milk). - AEM diluted 1:100 with water can also be sprayed onto feed, just prior to feeding.

Use AEM in drinking water in dilutions from 1:1,000 to 1:5,000, the higher dilutions for very young animals and for animals not accustomed to EM. – Note of caution: Do not apply AEM to water that has been in the trough for a prolonged period of time, apply it on fresh water only.

For spraying of AEM in the shed, on floors and walls, dilute it 1:100 with water; splashing animal bodies is welcome. Use about 1 liter per squ.m. once a week. When odours are controlled and general cleanliness and freedom from fly nuisance and from diseases have been achieved, frequency and dosage of AEM applications may be reduced.

For the bedding, a mixture of rice bran and saw dust can be made into bokashi and used in amounts of one handful (about 50 gr) per square meter. Or bedding can be sprayed with diluted AEM.

AEM can be added to septic tanks at a dilution of 1:1,000. If shed washing water and animal excreta are already inoculated with EM, this might not be necessary anymore.

Note of caution: In case the animal excreta are used for biogas generation, AEM should be added in very small volumes (1:50,000); according to one study, this will increase methane production. Large doses of AEM tend to suppress production of gas. – AEM may also be applied to sludge and wastewater from the biogas digester.
